Written and Directed by Cheryl Dunn
Tension is mounting in New York City as we glimpse into the hide outs, squats and club houses of some of NYC's notorious bicycle gangs. Too many stolen bikes, too many car crashes, not enough fresh air, something has to be done. Tonight there is a big meeting in union square to take back the streets. We see these hard core bike gangs gathering from the far reaches of the city, Black label, who build tall bikes two or three high, decked in their gang colors, The Landlords, never reveal their identities. All biz, just track bikes and krylon. Denim Venom, The Rockers, Bicycle Cherries dressed in dirty prom dresses and chains, Puerto Rico Schwinn Club with their restored tricked-out schwinns, and many more. The centerpiece is a colorful action montage of the gangs traveling over bridges, through parks and traversing through midtown traffic, cut with a high octane track by San Francisco art band, Tussle. The film blurs the line between docu and drama as we revisit each group for a little insight into the philosophies and activities of these eccentric characters known as the Bicycle Gangs of New York.
